As you may already know, we will be making a few changes to the site within the next few days. At the same time, we will by tidying up the official communication channels between our members and our employees. Over the years there has been a proliferation of tribes about Tribe, the result being that it is confusing for members to know where to go to find information, and it is next to impossible for employees to keep up with all of the different Tribe tribes. This is one of those tribes. As of September 21, 2006, this tribe will be made private and employees will no longer be monitoring it for new posts.

In its place we will have four new publicly accessible tribes that will serve as our official communication channels with users. These tribes will be monitored and actively moderated by employees of Tribe.net. These tribes will not be live until after our system upgrade. They are:

http://brainstorm.tribe.net - Tribe.net Brainstorm - much like tribeideas today, but with a fresh start.
http://bugs.tribe.net - Tribe.net Bug Reports - for reporting bugs that you find. As the bugs are fixed the threads may be culled (time and resource permitting on our side). Bugs that are actually more points of confusion will be entered into the FAQ if there is a workaround of better explanation.
http://faq.tribe.net - Tribe.net FAQ - this is not a place to ask questions, but rather a place where the posts will be "Jeopardy!" style, with the subject being a Question and the message being the answer. Members may post their own FAQ's or add more detail or workarounds to other people's FAQ's.
http://blog.tribe.net - Tribe.net Company Blog - This will be a moderated tribe that is mostly just to allow the employees to post announcements about the product, the industry, or anything pertinent to the business side of the house. For the time being we will not be allowing people to join, but are making it moderated so that its content may be syndicated.

You are free to join all of these new tribes after the upgrade is complete (except the Blog, of course). At this point, we are scheduling the upgrade for the morning of September 21. Each of the new tribes contains a description of what sort of postings are appropriate for that forum. We would like to thank all who have participated here. We do actually read and value the feedback, both good and bad. We try to do our best to keep up with it, even with the few employees we have, and we would encourage your continued constructive participation in the new Tribe tribes.

Here's what would make a chat feature truly useful for me as a triber.

First: Find a means to support as many types of chat programs as possible. Trillian supports quite a lot, and you've already got jabber set up, I imagine there's lots of possibilities. It might require that the user also have their chat program of choice active, but that's hardly a big deal, I would think.

Second: When someone signs up for Tribe (and obviously afterwards too), they should be able to configure their chat abilities and desires. They could either a) enter no info regarding their chat IDs, or b) enter chat program ID info, much as Trillian would accept. This would only apply to users who are already on each other's friends list, as tribe's user base is so broad that if someone was able to accept messages from non-friends, it would just serve as fast way for IM spammers to get your profile and start nailing you. Seems too problematic, as nice as it might be. One could always just list their chat IDs in their profile if they wanted to attract strangers to their chat abilities. Once that's done, a second dot (or modification of the dot in the corner of the profile that indicates an online user) would appear whenever a user is online who also has the same chat capabilities you have. In other words, it's not enough that we are both online and have our statuses set to allow contact, we both have to have AIM, MSN, Jabber IDs whatever. ONLY then will we see each other's special dots.

*When this special dot is clicked directly* it opens up a new dialogue window using your common programs regular interface. You can then send your message to the user. They can then deal with you as they wish, per the normal parameters of the chat programs.

Ideally, the Tribe Chat interface would be able to detect your settings on your chat programs, inculding statuses that indicate unavailability (such as invisible, ignore, etc) and leave your dot unmodified in such cases.

So essentially tribe would need to be able to detect a users chat program info/status, and convey those parameters to the profile icon periodically. It would also need to be able to send commands to the chat program when the special dot is clicked ("open new dialogue", etc.). This would require a fair amount of regular upgrades, as chat programs get updated, but hopefully not too often.

This could start small though, as a link to a special page with chat options. The page would have the logo for the program(s) supported by Tribe, which doubles as a 'download now' feature. You could then set your chat IDs on the same page, save and exit. So long as you are logged in to the service in question, Tribe detects it, and lights up your 'chat dot'.

I know that's more of a user-end experience description, but I'm not a technie so it's the best I've got.

Cheers.

This got me to thinking... why isn't TribeChat being pushed like other messaging engines out there? Everywhere I turn on the net I can find "AOL Instant Messenger is godlike!" or "Using Yahoo Messenger will cure cancer" or something equally prominent. But I have never seen TribeChat mentioned *anywhere*... not even on Tribe.net's own advertising banners! I only found out about it myself by accident when I happened to see "tribechat handle" in my listing when revising my profile, as I had forgotten about it.

It makes sense... tribe.net is geared toward bringing people together, so why not show them the quickest way to do just that? Also, it's a great way of simultaneously pushing tribe.net and expanding its range and notoriety.

if u are trying to do this, and having trouble, i'm willing to pass on the kewl help that barsnake gave to me and some stuff i learnt.

Couple of headlines

* DO NOT GET your chat client from JABBER.COM. u can't change the server, so it don't work.

* If ur on Windows try the client called GAIM, avail here:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php ? group_id=235&package_id=253

[u gotta kind of fiddle with that URL, take out the spaces either side of the question mark. sorry, it pasted funny unless i broke it up.]

u wanna DL the file called
Download gaim-1.3.1.exe

click on it, and away u go.

* the server name is maitai.tribe.net
make sure u don't have it as maitai.tribeS.net, which i did.

party on! ooh and u have to go into Buddies and click Show Offline Buddies to see ur Friends as possible chat participants. Then u gotta talk them through all this stuff so they can get on, whooo!

each one teach one, all props to BarSnake!
A.J.

Here's what my experience has been with Jabber [step by step]:

1. Added an arbitrary handle name to my Tribe Chat Handle field in the Personal tab of my Profile and saved it.

- My TribeChat Handle field now says: darin

2. Downloaded a free open IM client [Jabber]

3. Added an account to Jabber with the username: darin@maitai.tribe.net

- Yours would be <your chat handle>@maitai.tribe.net.

4. I entered the same password that I use to log in to my tribe.net profile on this wesite for the darin@maitai.tribe.net user account in Jabber.

5. The new account I just created in Jabber says that its connected to the network after a few seconds.

- If this doesn't occur, the TribeChat Handle name and the username you created in Jabber aren't set properly, or the password you login to tribe.net with and the Jabber user account you created are not configured properly. This was the most confusing step for me.

6. Once everything is configured correctly in step 5: I see a window in Jabber with all of my friends in the group. Most of them are disabled because they don't have a TribeChat Handle saved and a free open-IM client and associated account created yet. Hopefully, this will catch on and we'll get a lot more people in the fold!

Since bitlbee is not quite your everyday typical client, I figured I'd try something a bit more mainstream, and so I downloaded psi. I can log into my other jabber accounts with it just fine, but when pointing to maitai.tribe.net I get the response

Hi All,

Here’s what you need to do in order to get tribechat working:

STEP 1: Set your TribeChat handle on the Personal tab in your profile.

STEP 2: Download a jabber client.
Some clients that people have used successfully:

GAIM: http://www.download.com/3000-2150_4-10281799.html

Exodus: http://exodus.jabberstudio.org/

STEP 3: Configure a jabber account on that client:
Jabber ID = <TribeChat Handle>@maitai.tribe.net
Password = <The password I use to log in to tribe>

If these don’t work for you try getting a different jabber client and post your experiences in this tribe.

You can see what luck other people have had with jabber clients here:

Please post issues you run into here rather than the tribe.net bugs tribe.

Welcome to the wonderful world of alpha products. Here is a bug that we have found today that you should all know about: tribechat handles may contain *only* letters (upper or lower case), numbers, and underscores. We are going to have to blank out those handles which contain things like spaces, punctuation, etc. I will also be putting a fix in place to make sure that these validations rules are enforced when you first submit your handle.
