I've been asking people if they have a tribechat handle and they say something along the lines of "I haven't figured it out" (and don't want to bother) or "What's a Tribechat handle?"
This got me to thinking... why isn't TribeChat being pushed like other messaging engines out there? Everywhere I turn on the net I can find "AOL Instant Messenger is godlike!" or "Using Yahoo Messenger will cure cancer" or something equally prominent. But I have never seen TribeChat mentioned *anywhere*... not even on Tribe.net's own advertising banners! I only found out about it myself by accident when I happened to see "tribechat handle" in my listing when revising my profile, as I had forgotten about it.
It makes sense... tribe.net is geared toward bringing people together, so why not show them the quickest way to do just that? Also, it's a great way of simultaneously pushing tribe.net and expanding its range and notoriety.
Just a thought...

Re: Why is TribeChat so unknown?
Mon, July 11, 2005 - 12:44 PMpartially cuz the protocals aren't used much...
tribecast..you only have a couple of choices far as actual Im chat programs go...I do use trillian but it's the non paying version..
and personally it's too much hassle for most users to configure their exodus or gaim clients for tribechat....easier to use yahoo, aim, msn etc...
Although if Tribe wants to CHARGE to have internal chat IMs or chatrooms...then they gotta make sure it'll be worth the cost of throwing out more servers and java programmers to do all that stuff...

We originally put out the chat functionality as more of an experiment than an actual product feature. It works OK, but there are some stabilty problems. We had always envisioned chat as being a more integrated part of the site, so that you could do cool things like search for content via chat or even post to your blog using your IM client. These projects just never really got prioritized so what we are left with is a TribeChat that still works OK but little more.
However, as we continue to grow and look for more innovative ways of connecting people to each other and to content that they will find interesting, we may be able to take up the Chat integration again. But this has not really surfaced as a strategic priority quite yet... -

Re: Why is TribeChat so unknown?
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 11:30 AMIt would be very nice if someone would write up a step-by-step guide for setting up the various programs like GUSH, or Exodus, post it and then everyone could share that post to facilitate getting chat up and running.
I'd like to try out this chat on tribe, but my time is limited and looking around for burried post about how someone did it consumes the little time I have and so I don't have chat running yet. I would like to though.
