Then when I connect and enter my password, it says "Invalid Jabber ID"

    Patrick, is this still a problem for you?

    Beause we're not backing the chat client with the same database server as the site, it's possible for you to set and/or change your handle, and not be able to log in using it for several tens of minutes.
