Critical Mass

topic posted Wed, January 4, 2006 - 5:55 PM by  Trent
No one will use TribeChat until there are more people to chat with.

----

Tribe will not back TribeChat until more people use it and demand features. Eyeballs equal service.

----

How do we reach critical mass?

----

I would love to add new friends for the express purpose of bootstrapping tribe chat. I promise to log on to TribeChat for an hour each day.

I encourage others to review my list of friends looking for those endorsed as TribeChat activists.

----

Others should post to this thread. Those posting should promise to spend time logged into TribeChat and solicit friends for the sole purpose of chatting.

I would spend time logged in, if only I could log in.

oooh....I just tried it, and it looks like it might have let me on....

'course none of my friends are logged in

    we'll see....

If you are like me you have your browser set up to automatically log you in when you visit tribe.net.

To get the Jabber client working you will need your user name and password.

      Jabber ID = <TribeChat Handle>@maitai.tribe.net
Password = <The password I use to log in to tribe>

I have no problem logging in.

There is one more thing. Make sure your client is set to allow plaintext authorization. Our current server doesn't support encrypted passwords and many clients won't connect without being told.

Yep... Thats how it's set. Like I said, I can log in... It just immediately disconnects me. Then the software reconnects, and I get hung up on again.

Okay,s ee that whole sentence was meaningless to me. I wouldn't know how to do this. I recommend somethinge asier. So far (and I'm trying to give this a thorough lookover before giving ita final judgement) I am adding "too complicated" to my list of reasons *not* to use it. 3 and 0 at the moment. Still looking.

Now that Google has Talk going, anyone with a Google login can chat/instant message through jabber:talk.google.com. Many many developer sites also host Jabber. That ought help build critical mass and also train users on installing and configuring Jabber clients.

I've had my client, iChat, logged into Maitai since Tribe turned on the switch, way before they announced it, but i've never seen any of my friends online. I guess i have the wrong friends.
