What clients have people used to connect to TribeChat?

  • Proteus works well on the Mac. Just go to the Accounts tab of Preferences and add a new Jabber account.
    • Nitro sucks. It's crashed on me a bunch of times, so I've abandoned it.

Fire seems to be relatively stable. However, I can't seem to figure out how to keep it from truncating URLs that get sent to me via IM.
      • Adium X works like a champ.
        • Chris, based upon your recommendation, I tried Adium X 0.76 over the past week. Although it looks nice and works fine in daily use, even as beta, it crashed often when configuring my logins and importing buddy lists. Further, it mangles them, changing MSN buddies into broken AIM handles. An even bigger no-no, it imports every HotMail address in Address Book and converts them into instant messenger buddies, even those not so designated. They then get a buddy list invitation!

Upon returning to Fire 1.5.1, I then found every HotMail handle broken, set as AIM handles again, but missing their "alias names" and other data I entered into Fire's local buddy records. Converting back to AIM buddies then added each to all my AIM accounts. Depending upon their AOL client, settings, and status, that sends yet more AIM invitations using logins I had not intended to use with everyone! That sucks big.

To be sure, Fire lets you make this same mistake, but you can avoid it by adding buddies using only your logged in account and then unmarking your other logins. And to be fair, Adium is young and hold promise, but for now, Fire.sourceforge.net works better.

    • I tried Nitro and Proteus
I like Proteus WAAAAAAAAAY better, but I have 2 gripes:
1.There's no webcam function (not a must)
      2. You can't tell when someone else is typing a message that hasn't been sent yet. (a la Yahoo) I have totally gotten used to this function and it changes the way you chat
Anyone know of any clients for Mac OSX that have that function?

Ok, just had a brief chat with someone already one of my 'tribe friends' so that confirms that my set up works, haven't had any luck communicating with anyone not in my 'tribe friends' I've added a few, but they don't show as online.

You should in theory be able to chat with people who aren't on your friends list, but we have made no effort yet to support or test this functionality. In other words, unlike AIM and Yahoo!, with tribe you cannot changing your friends list via that chat client. I can imagine sometime down the road that this would be an interesting way to grow your network - i.e. chat with someone and they then show up on your Friends' list. But for now, you have to make friends on the site before they will work correctly on your chat client.
  • I'm using Kopete under Mandrake Linux (in Gnome, even though it's a KDE app). I can connect just fine, though I haven't managed to actually chat with anyone yet. Querying the server about services it provides doesn't work, and I think it should, so perhaps it's not working as well as I hope.

iChat works with Tribechat. You just have to turn off SSL in the server settings tab, then it works fine.
